
Australian shares slip as Computershare, South32 weigh on benchmark
Australian equities finished lower on Wednesday, with the S&P/ASX 200 falling 0.4% to close at 9,209.40, as losses in a handful of large-cap names outweighed gains elsewhere on the board.
Laggards led by Computershare
Among companies valued at A$15 billion (US$10.59 billion) or more, share registry firm Computershare was the session's biggest drag, sliding 4.5%. Miner South32 was close behind, down 3.5%, while shopping centre owner Scentre Group slipped 1.8%.
Energy and insurance names buck the trend
Not every large-cap stock joined the retreat. Lithium producer PLS Group was the standout gainer, adding 4.3%, followed by insurer Suncorp Group, up 3.3%. Energy retailer Origin Energy rounded out the day's top three advancers with a 2.9% gain.
Currency and bonds
The Australian dollar edged lower against its US counterpart, with the greenback strengthening 0.1% to buy A$1.42, as the WSJ Dollar Index held roughly steady at 96.19.In fixed income, the yield on Australia's 10-year government bond eased 0.86 basis points to 5.005%.
